The story of Pinocchio is probably one we are all familiar with, whether we have read the original fairytale story or watched the Disney classic in 1940. However, in recent years, Disney has been creating mediocre remakes and live-action versions of some of their iconic stories with little to no creativity or originality to them. Instead, most of the films feel very cheap and lackluster. Even stranger is the current wave of “Pinocchio” remakes from numerous movie studios. With the new Disney live-action film, Pinocchio (2022), starring Tom Hanks, and Pinocchio: A True Story (2021), another animated film. Both of these films probably ruined the reputation that most older generations have known the story of Pinocchio to be.
However, hope is not all lost, for the legendary director Guillermo del Toro will be releasing his new version of Pinocchio on Netflix on December 9, 2022. It is also currently out in theaters to watch right now! Del Toro has brought this story to life with new meaning and a new medium of stop-motion animation.
If you haven’t already watched the trailer, here is a link:
Guillermo del Toro is a famous Mexican filmmaker who also created films like Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) and Shape of Water (2017) both which are abundant in fantasy and magic. So without a doubt, del Toro’s rendition of Pinocchio was a match made in heaven as he brings new light to the story that has never been seen before. Going more into depth of what it means to be human and the “gift of life.”
Nowadays it is so rare to actually be excited for a film to come out. But I have faith in filmmakers who are passionate about film and truly care about their craft. I can only hope that more filmmakers and studios will realize the success in del Toro’s Pinocchio and change the ways films are being produced for the better.
