By now you’ve probably seen countless YouTubers praising this film and even well known movie critics rated this movie insanely high. I will tell you, I understand your suspicion, because I was once in your position too. However, I ultimately decided to just go to a nearby theater and see for myself. Surprisingly, all those reviews were legitimate, Puss in Boots The Last Wish is a great film. Maybe even one of the best Dreamworks films, or just animated films to come out in a long time.

The animation style is refreshing and vibrant, and the pacing of the story is done wonderfully, there was never a dull moment on screen. All the characters felt fleshed out like creators were serious about making this movie and it shows! Although the film isn’t perfect, what movie is?

Now I won’t go into spoilers here but I admit there were some flaws in the beginning, but one of them takes away from how good this movie is.

Honestly from the trailers, the film seems like a very simple story (which it kinda is) but it’s in the execution of the film that makes the film phenomenal and enjoyable. I also feel like the film knew who its target audience was because any viewer from kid to adult would be able to enjoy the story. The film never talks down to you and constantly throws cheesy messages at you, instead it just does what Dreamworks does best by giving us the sequel we never knew we needed.

It further develops the story of Puss and explores his deep fear of death and insecurities within himself. This along with the ‘cats has 9 lives’ tropes that make for such a thrilling and emotional ride. Also the film takes more fairytale stories and puts their own twist to it like how their predecessor Shrek does best. I just love how detailed and carefully crafted this film was made, because almost everything that has been introduced in the film was used, almost no plot point left unused.

Another great thing about this movie is that it’s easily a standalone. Despite being a sequel to the first Puss in Boots, you don’t even need to watch that one to understand this film. Like all characters and stories are explained, so that’s great if you didn’t enjoy the first Puss in Boots

Now I gotta say I never thought that a movie within the SCU or SHREK CINEMATIC UNIVERSE would be the film that gets me excited about movies again. But if all future dreamworks films continue to be made this way, with fun creativity and heartfelt storylines, there may be hope for the younger generation after all.

This is great news because after years of what felt like Dreamworks was going downhill from the Boss Baby and Trolls series, we are finally getting films that audiences want to watch and aren’t quick and forgettable cash grabs.

So, if you ever get the chance to watch this film in theaters please do, because films like this deserve all the praise and recognition they can get!
